Contrabassophon by H. J. Haseneier, Coblenz, ca. 1850–80, This ultra-compact configuration was the original inspiration for the Heckel contrabassoon. The very wide bore and shallow tone holes are similar in principle to those of Guntram Wolf's modern Contraforte. Haseneier's forward-looking invention inspired many imitators. Almost all surviving exemplars are in museum collections. Complete and playable in historic case, with modern bocal. $20,000 negotiable.
